Isabela Aquino

PhD Student in Psychotherapy, Pontifical Catholic University – University of Chile

Title: “Reconnecting with the body: A focusing-based intervention to promote interoception in the treatment of anxiety distress”.

I am Isabela Aquino, a psychologist with a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology for Adults and a third-year doctoral student in Psychotherapy. My research interests focus on interoception, bodily experience, and the processes of change in psychotherapy. My doctoral thesis aims to understand how an intervention based on Focusing can foster a more conscious and trusting relationship with one’s own body, and contribute to a reduction in anxiety. I am also interested in exploring the role of bodily experience in emotional regulation and psychological well-being. In my free time, I enjoy reading—especially novels—and discovering new stories and perspectives.

In the clinical sphere, I work as a psychotherapist with a humanistic approach—specifically as a Focusing-Oriented Therapist. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Psychotherapy at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where my doctoral research focuses on the study of physiological synchrony—particularly heart rate variability (HRV)—between patient and therapist, and its relationship to the therapeutic process and clinical outcomes.

I am a doctor and a graduate of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, with an interest in psychiatry and mental health. Within this field, I focus on mental health conditions that have a significant functional and emotional impact on patients—specifically Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), psychosis, and eating disorders. I aim to contribute to the understanding of the neurobiology and cognitive processes underlying these conditions, with the goal of improving available therapies and the quality of life for patients. In my free time, I enjoy cinema and literature, and I also like to write literary texts.

Undergraduate Students

Maximiliano Ceardi M.

Laboratory Assistant

I hold a degree in Biochemistry and am currently working on my thesis for a professional Biochemistry qualification. I am also in my final semester of a minor in Psychology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Adopting a transdisciplinary approach, I aim to bridge immunology, physiology, and biomedicine with mental health, psychometrics, and clinical/anamnestic data, utilizing data science and an integrated systems perspective. I am currently collaborating on a joint, co-supervised project involving the Faculty of Biological Sciences (Cellular Immunology; Dr. María Isabel Yuseff), the Faculty of Medicine (Psychosomatic Biomedicine; Dr. Jheimmy Díaz), and the Faculty of Social Sciences (CognEmo; Dr. Félix Bacigalupo). My thesis involves designing analytical algorithms and conducting multivariate analyses to identify translational biomarkers for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I consider myself a curious individual with a branching, non-linear way of thinking, and I am deeply passionate about the mind-body connection. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with friends, watching movies and series, listening to podcasts and TEDx talks, and exercising.
